Social Media is both a blessing and a curse. This depends on how we will use this wonderful medium of information. As a tool, it has changed how we communicate to other people. One’s personal thoughts, photos and videos that speaks important moments, entrepreneurial ventures and even government processes can be done with ease and be shared instantly within seconds to a wide group of people like friends, family members, and even strangers.
But before we tackle how we can better utilize social media, we must ask ourselves first what social media is? According to Obar and Wildman (2015), Social media are interactive digitally-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, career interests, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. While challenges to the definition of social media arise due to the broad variety of stand-alone and built-in social-media services currently available, there are some common features:
Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.
User-generated content — such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions — is the lifeblood of social media.
Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by the social-media organization.
Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user’s profile with those of other individuals or groups.
There are many problem in use of social media that you may encounter like fake news, be aware of use of social media because people nowadays is easily believe on what they see in social media they are trying to make fake news to slander someone record, the second problem of using social media is lock of socialization because all of your time will be only focus in social media and our attention will be on scrolling and wasting time in social media and we don’t have time to talk with our family at home because our body clock it’s not the same as them body clock. And another thing, this can be the cause of sickness in the near future because of too much of using social media.
Social media can cause crime like Online Threats, Stalking, Cyber bullying, the most commonly reported and seen crimes that occur on social media involve people making threats, bullying, harassing, and stalking others online. While much of this type of activity goes unpunished, or isn’t taken seriously, victims of these types of crimes frequently don’t know when to call the police. If you feel threatened by a statement made online about you, or believe that the threat is credible, it’s probably a good idea to consider is tell to our parents so that there are aware about what happened in us. Hacking and Fraud, although logging into a friend’s social media account to post an embarrassing status message may be acceptable between friends, but technically, can be a serious crime. Additionally, creating fake accounts, or impersonation accounts, to trick people (as opposed to just remaining anonymous), can also be punished as fraud depending on the actions the fake/impersonation account holder takes. Keep our accounts in private so that they cannot get our information or pictures.”
Too much use of social media can harm you, why? Because it can not only cause unhappiness and a general dissatisfaction with life in users, but also increase the risk of developing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. One of the example of this is when your friend or another people post his pictures in the beach or he/she is on the hotel something like that and then you get jealous and you say in yourself that I want to there because you see your friend posting his/her picture in there. Always remember that we are different to each other and God created us in our own uniqueness.
Social media originated as a way to interact with friends and family but was later adopted by businesses which wanted to take advantage of a popular new communication method to reach out to customers. The power of social media is the ability to connect and share information with anyone on Earth, or with many people simultaneously. Globally, there are more than 3 billion social media users. Social media is an ever-changing and ever-evolving web-based platform. According to the Pew Research Center, social media users tend to be younger. Nearly 90 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 29 used at least one form of social media. Further, these users tend to be better educated and relatively wealthy, or earning over $75,000 per year.
Media regulations are rules enforced by the jurisdiction of law. This regulation, via law, rules or procedures, can have various goals, for example intervention to protect a stated “public interest”, or encouraging competition and an effective media market, or establishing common technical standards.
To some up all social media have negative and positive effect in our life. Be wise when using social media and use the social media in good intention, don’t use social media to harm or destroy other people life. Let social media to be way in spreading the Good news of our God so that many people will know the Lord. Just be responsible and think many times before sharing our thoughts. Based on the saying “think before you click.” And also I want to share this quote to everyone because it really help me to be aware in using social media and make me wiser person. “Don’t use social media to impress people, use it to impact people” –Dave Willis.org. be contented for what you have and just go with the flow with contentment in our life.
